Once Upon a Time, Fashion Told a Story

While scrolling on social media, posts/ads come up on home pages, but why are they on our specific for-you pages? Social media has expanded more than many people acknowledge today. From liking to commenting or sharing a post, these simple actions create a digital footprint of what one likes. From data being collected, advertisements are shown to target audiences who could be interested. These are three posts that popped up on my Instagram home page today, though I only follow one of the three brands. The first post, Djerf Avenue, which I follow, and the other two posts are from Skims and Coach, whom I do not follow. These posts all sparked interest due to the trendy and current approach to marketing.


While Djerf Avenue and Coach offer everyday lifestyle marketing through their story-telling product photoshoots, Skims goes for an editorial-styled shoot where models are placed in the setting of a bikini contest, where they are wearing Kim K’s bikinis with voluminous hair and high heels whilst drenched in body oil head to toe. Djerf Avenue went for a girly get-together while sippin’ wine in the signature Djerf robes, which are very relaxed, feminine, and relatable. Coach went for a walk in New York City with the necessities! Who is a real New Yorker if they aren’t rocking these layered Coach New York-inspired bags? The mixture of marketing tactics today captures the hearts of various generations. These three posts focus on the interests of Gen Z and Millennials. All of these fashion-related posts draw attention to different products and lifestyles, which attract different individuals from these generations. From super posed shoots to relatable everyday activities, these are the motions that keep consumers interested in the fashion industry. The next time you scroll on social media, think about why certain products are popping up as ads to you specifically. Technology is today and social media picks up data from each individual that uses it. Talk soon!
